Wu Zetian Sitting in the World

Wu (624~705) was summoned to the palace at the age of 14 by Emperor Taizong Li Shimin of the Tang Dynasty as a courtesan under the name of "Wu Mei". After the death of Emperor Taizong, Zetian became a nun at the Sanye Temple. When Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty ascended to the throne, he called Wu Mei back to the palace, where she was honored with the title of Zhaoyi (昭儀). She was in conflict with Empress Wang and Consort Xiao Shufei in the harem. In 655, Emperor Gaozong made Wu the Empress. Wu Zetian was an intelligent woman with extensive knowledge of literature and history. Soon after Wu Zetian became empress, Gaozong entrusted her to deal with certain political affairs due to his infirmity, and her power grew. On the first year (674), Emperor Gaozong called "Emperor", Empress Wu Zetian called "Queen of Heaven", and called "two saints" in the palace.

In the first year of Hongdao (683), Emperor Gaozong died and Prince Li Xian assumed the throne.
